December 26, 2012: True Taste Recalls Smoked Fish Due To Botulism Concern

On December 18th, True Taste LLC from Kenosha, WI placed a recall on multiple smoked fish due to the concern that they may be contaminated with Clostridium botulinum, including: Hot Smoked Rainbow Trout, Hot Smoked Whitefish, Hot Smoked Herring, Hot Smoked Mackerel, Hot Smoked Salmon Steak, Cold Smoked Mackerel, and Cold Smoked Whitefish.  The recalled fish is package and vacuum packed with either the True Taste Label from California or a Lowell Foods Label from Illinois.

According to the FDA, this recall included vacuum packed smoked fish that was in production anytime after 01/01/12.  This date can be found on the packaging from the first set of numbers on the white sticker.

Clostridium botulinum is a bacterium that causes the Botulism infection.  Symptoms of botulism may include dry mouth, difficulty swallowing, slurred speech or difficulty speaking, muscle weakness, blurred vision, double vision, and drooping eyelids. Symptoms usually appear 12 to 36 hours after consuming Clostridium botulinum toxin; however, symptoms can occur as early as 6 hours or as late as 10 days following the consumption of contaminated food.

It has been determined that these products have a pH and a water activity level that is too high and could be a possible health hazard. With these high levels, it is possible for Clostridium botulism sickness. Use of these products may cause the following symptoms: Onset of symptoms in foodborne botulism is usually 18 to 36 hours after ingestion of the food containing the toxin, although cases have varied from 4 hours to 8 days. Early signs of intoxication consist of marked lassitude, weakness and vertigo, usually followed by double vision and progressive difficulty in speaking and swallowing. Difficulty in breathing, weakness of other muscles, abdominal distention, and constipation may also be common symptoms.

AZ, AR, CA, CO, CT, DE, FL, GA, IL, IN, IA, KS, KY, LA, ME, MD, MA, MI, MN, MS, MO, MT, NE, NV, NH, NJ, NM, NY, NC, ND, OH, OK, OR, PA, RI, SC, SD, TN, TX, VT, VA, WA, WV, WI, WY.

Carmel California Restaurant Recalls Cioppino Sauce

June 17, 2009:  In a press release issued today, the California Department of Public Health is warning consumers not to eat the Cioppino Sauce produced by the Sea Harvest Restaurant of Carmel, CA.  The restaurant is voluntarily recalling the sauce due to the possibility of contamination with Colostridium botulinum toxin.

One possible reason for the recall is that the restaurant does not have the cannery license that is required to produce this type of product.  Without the proper manufacturing practices being put into place, a canned product of this type is at risk for C. botulinum contamination.

The Cioppino Sauce was packaged in BALL wide-mouth canning jars. The Cioppino Sauce jars have a white computer printer label that identifies the name of the product, lists the ingredients, states “PRODUCT OF SEA HARVEST” and “REFRIGERATE AFTER OPENING”.  Consumers may contact the restaurant at 831-626-3626 with any additional questions.

About Clostridium botulinum and Botulism

Botulism is an infectious disease caused by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. Although rare, botulism is a serious paralytic illness caused by a nerve toxin, which is produced by the bacterium. This potent toxin blocks nerve function, leading to respiratory and musculoskeletal paralysis.

An individual with botulism may experience double vision, blurred vision, dry mouth, inability to swallow, difficulty speaking or slurred speech, muscle weakness, drooping eyelids, and an inability to breathe. Botulism can be fatal, and medical attention should be sought immediately.

Foodborne botulism is caused by ingesting food contaminated with C. botulinum toxin. Botulism is most often associated with eating improperly canned foods (vegetables, fruits, fish, and meats), luncheon meats, ham, sausage, stuffed eggplant, lobster, and smoked or salted fish. It poses a serious health problem since many people can become poisoned from a single contaminated food source.
