With these high levels, it is possible for Clostridium botulism sickness. Use of these products may cause the following symptoms: Onset of symptoms in foodborne botulism is usually 18 to 36 hours after ingestion of the food containing the toxin, although cases have varied from 4 hours to 8 days. Early signs of intoxication consist of marked lassitude, weakness and vertigo, usually followed by double vision and progressive difficulty in speaking and swallowing. Difficulty in breathing, weakness of other muscles, abdominal distention, and constipation may also be common symptoms.</span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><span style="font-family: Verdana; font-size: 9pt;">Botulism is a foodborne contaminant that is typically associated with home canning.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  Prior to canning, f</span>oods should always be handled in a sanitary manner.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>Additionally, if the final product does not have the correct level of acidity, there is a greater risk for the contamination to occur.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>According to the CDC, approximately 145 cases are reported.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>Fifteen percent of that comes from foodborne <em>C. botulism</em>.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><span style="font-family: Verdana; font-size: 9pt;">Symptoms of <em>C. botulism</em> may include dry mouth, difficulty swallowing, slurred speech or difficulty speaking, muscle weakness, blurred vision, double vision, and drooping eyelids. Symptoms usually appear 12 to 36 hours after consuming <em>C. botulinum</em> toxin; however, symptoms can occur as early as 6 hours or as late as 10 days following the consumption of contaminated food.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><span style="font-family: Verdana; font-size: 9pt;"><em>C. Botulism</em> can be fatal, and should be treated as a medical emergency. If left untreated, muscle paralysis may progress to the arms, legs, trunk, and respiratory muscles, possibly resulting in death. A patient with severe <em>C. botulism</em> poisoning may require use of a breathing machine and intensive medical care for several months. Patients may experience fatigue and shortness of breath for several years following their recovery from <em>C. botulism</em> poisoning.</span></p>
